Stripcast: True Stories from a Stripper with a PhD

My name is Lux ATL, and I am a mother, wife, business owner, former university instructor, and lifelong stripper. From the halls of academia to the strip club stage, my life as a post-academic feminist sex worker has been filled with unique sociological insight, unforgettable friendships, and a thousand beautiful messes in between. These are my true stories of the highs and lows of an ex-academic and lifelong stripper pole dancing for pay on stages all across the South.

What's up, dudes? Thanks for tuning in to Stripcast: True Stories from a Stripper with a PhD.

Today's episode is about the day I knew I was done with the academy. If you are not working at a University, you may not know about the exploitative, dead-end reality of the American academy. However, after twelve years in the field, I was acutely aware of the grim realities of adjuncting, temporary appointments, and moving state to state for insultingly low sums. In this episode, let me take you on a journey through my escape from the academy to my full-time reentry into sex work. Enjoy!

What’s up, dudes? Thanks for tuning into Stripcast: True Stories from a Stripper with a PhD. Today’s episode answers the question: what really happens in a strip club, in those dark closets called VIP rooms, and from what well do we draw—sisters, strippers, fellow hoes—and how deep does it run?

You’ll never know, because a good stripper will never tell.

But—

I haven’t been a good stripper for a long time.

What’s up, dudes?  Thanks for tuning in yet again to Stripcast. Today’s episode has been the hardest one for me to write.

Today’s episode doesn’t take place in a strip club--today’s episode takes place inside of my teenage heart. Today’s episode tells the story of all the deep, terrible trouble I got into as a teenager for having sex, and the repercussions and scars that would follow me for the rest of my life. I talk about my adolescent experiences with sex, the unfair double standards imposed upon girls, and how my young life and that of so many other young women were stained with shame, while the boys are either congratulated or made out to be the victim in this world of sexual double standards.

This episode is about the truly life-and-death impact this had on my life, and how a single act of kindness made me feel human again.

What’s up, dudes? Thanks for tuning in to Episode 6: I Fell in Love With a Stripper.

Today’s episode is about the first time that I ever had a real deal full-out lesbian sexual experience, and then just straight up fell in love with this chick. I was in my early 20’s, and still working at the first club I had ever worked at. There was another stripper there who went by the name of Crystal, who was constantly giving me the fuck me eyes, tempting me… until finally, one night, she invited me to spend the night. Glances, flirtations, hidden kisses, hot lovemaking, and finally a broken heart: this is the story of the first time I fell in love with a stripper.

What’s up, dudes? Thanks for tuning in to Stripcast: True Stories From a Stripper with a PhD.

Today’s episode is entitled “Top Shelf Stripper,” and it’s about me falling on my ass-- figuratively and literally. Today, let me tell you about the only time I have ever been fired in my life--from a honky-tonk titty bar on the outskirts of town—and then decided to pick up my dignity, and become a top shelf stripper at the classiest joint in our great city of Atlanta, the world famous Cheetah. Here is the story of what happened when I tried to pretend I was high class.

What’s up, dudes? Thanks for tuning in to Episode 4: Stripclub Love Stories

Strip club love stories is about just that. The connections you make in this strange and unique environment that is at once totally false and yet totally real.

People who are not part of the industry tend to think of stripclubs as sort of soulless faceless holes where no real feelings could ever occur. I’m here to tell you today that’s not true. Listen to my stories about the love, friendship, the ways we helped each other, and the ways we failed each other up in that trap house. Enjoy!

Stripclub Love Stories: Johanna

  • Beautiful in every way: porcelain skin, lean muscle, curves, shiny black hair
  • A work of art: maneuvers around the stage like a serpent, fluid, hypnotizing
  • I know why you do this: she made me feel unalone when I was alone
  • Do you think anyone could ever love me? love someone like me...
  • How could anyone not love you?
  • Could anyone ever love you, my sweet friend...
  • My heart breaks to see this beauty wasted, unnoticed in the mirrors of her soul
  • Women watching, whispering fantasies, if only I could be like her
  • You count now, today with no provisions. You count today!

Stripclub Love Stories: Part 2

  • I’m a dancer too, he replies
  • 8 years in the industry, jaded, hard, face aching from smiling, back aching from arching
  • He asks me for a dance
  • I would like for you to keep on your clothes, and hug me instead
  • This hug was different, the kind you give your friend, your grandma, the kind that says I’m here with you, I feel you
  • All bullshit disappeared
  • Just two strippers hugging it out in the traphouse

Stripclub Love Stories: Part 3

  • She was super trailer park; brassy blond edges
  • Tatoos received from a kitchen table; rebel flags, chained pitbulls
  • Success is misspelled across her shoulder blade
  • She has a pimp; the girls whisper
  • Everyone hated Misty; she was country, inelegant, low-down
  • I loved Misty; When that Southern accent spilled out, I was hooked
  • She felt like home, to me
  • Breaking rules in VIP is a risk
  • I let you take the risk for me
  • I let you take the fall for me
  • She looked right through me

What’s up, dudes? Thanks for tuning in to Episode 3: When I Came Back for the Last Time.

Stripping always comes in seasons--quitting and going back, quitting and going back. Today’s episode is about the beginning of my last season of stripping.

I was 30 years old, a wife, mom, and panicking graduate student. I had my dissertation to complete, the job market wasn’t looking good, and I had started to lose faith in the academy. No to mention the frightening looming student loan debt. In this episode, I walk you through my re-entry into the trap house as an ABD PhD student with a family at home.

This episode goes out to all the academics out there, who are freaked out about the field and wondering what to do. Enjoy!

Truths and insights from my last reentry into stripping:

  • A long year alone with a baby can make you forget who you are
  • A Groupon special on pole dancing can reawaken some shit
  • You partner might not find your job so easy to accept
  • Pole tricks and dance ability don’t mean shit at The Oasis Goodtime Emporium
  • Thousands of dollars are made in tiny dark closets
  • Once you realize you can make $1000 in a night, that knowledge dogs you, changes you, makes you reconsider everything

Hello friends! Thanks for tuning in to Stripcast, true stories from a stripper with a PhD. Today, I am going to tell you about my first night ever stripping. After totaling my car on the way to the club and earning my first “naughty stripper” fine on my very first night ever stripping, this much was obvious: I had no fucking clue what I was doing.  Fortunately, I was lucky enough to have an old pro give me some tips and introduce me to the fundamentals of strip club culture. I hope you get a laugh and perhaps some insight from this libertine tale of my first night ever stripping. Enjoy!

My first night ever stripping...

Truths and insights into my first night ever stripping:

  • In 1999, pantsuits and closed toe pumps were hot shit for club wear
  • Keep your eyes on the road, even when looking frantically for a stripper store at which to purchase these items
  • Zebra print pantsuit, silver pumps, “bitch” rhinestone earrings make for a dope-ass baby stripper get-up
  • A blur of electric nerves in the baseline emotion for a first-time professional naked lady
  • Some men want a friend; some get attached; some are powerful and secretive; some want to be called “bitch;” some are addicted to strippers; some fall in love; some become friends; some become stalkers.
  • Removing your top at the wrong time results in a hefty fine and an angry housemom
  • $187, a fortune, marks the beginning of a career

Welcome to Stripcast, Episode One. My name is Lux ATL, although in a past life, most folks knew me as Dr. Lindsay Byron. I have been dancing in strip clubs since I was 18, but I am more than an accomplished exotic dancer. I am a wife, a mother, and a business owner. I have a PhD in English, and worked as a university instructor for years before abandoning the field entirely to pursue my passion for empowering women through sensual dance and mind-opening feminist talks. While I am now focused on my business as a motivational speaker and a pole dance instructor, the foundation of much of my knowledge comes from my many years spent in the trap house. I am a writer, a teacher, a punk rock philosopher, and a lifelong stripper--and I’d like to share my unusual story with you.

Today, I’m going to tell you about my last night ever stripping...

Here are a few truths and questions discovered during my final strip club shift:

  • Staying up all night and drinking can lose it’s appeal
  • Dancing for money under the critical eye of horny guys has it’s drawbacks
  • Chronic vomiting out of my car window at the end of my shift is never a good sign
  • Do I need to legitimize my work? To whom? For whom?
  • Is my post-baby body sexy—or shameful?
  • Why would anyone name their son Chad?
  • Am I done stripping—for real this time?
